Panchamahabhutani
'Pancha' means five, 'maha' means great and 'bhuta' means elements. Therefore, Panchamahabhutani, meaning the five great elements is a group of five basic elements. The five great elements consist of the following:
1) Fire ( Agni )
2) Air ( Vayu )
3) Sky ( Aakash )
4) Earth ( Prithvi )
5) Water ( Jala )
Each of these elements possess inherent physical properties.
All living and non living things in the universe are made from these five great elements. These are the basic elements which is necessary for every one to sustain.
The etymology behind the name is:
The word ‘bhuta’ is derived from “Bhu” dhatu (Sanskrit root) and “Kta”pratyaya (suffix). It means existence in the universe. That which can be perceived through the external sense organs is called Bhuta.
Importance of Panchamahabhuta:
Panchamahabhuta play a great role in Ayurveda.
