The story of Ganapati and Kartikeya

Drawn by Siddhi Pophale

One day sage Narada gave goddess Parvati a divine fruit, which both of her sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya wanted. So, she and Lord Shankar decided that the one who circles the world three times and comes back first, would receive the fruit. Kartikeya immediately sat on his vahana i.e. peacock and embarked on his voyage to circle the world three times. Lord Ganesha knew that he would be no match to Kartikeya because of his huge belly and mouse as a vahana. So, Lord Ganesha thought for a while and started circling his parents, Lord Shiva and Parvati three times. On questioning him, Lord Ganesha replied, “My world is at my parents feet!”

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were pleased. Ganesha not only received the divine fruit, but also received admiration from all. Hence, Lord Ganesha is also declared as the god of wisdom and knowledge. When Kartikeya returned, he felt cheated and left his parents.

This story highlights the importance of clever thinking in adversity. If you focus and utilise the available resources well, you can make the best out of anything!
